Director: Elizabeth Hickey
Secretary General: Kulsum Gulamhusein
Dear Honored Delegates,
My name is Elizabeth Hickey and it is my privilege to invite you to the 4th annual American School of Dubai Model United Nations Conference. Our conference will be held on Wednesday, April 24th through Saturday, April 27, 2019. Providing the best delegate experience has always been our goal, and with committees simulating bodies from around the world, we hope we can offer something that appeals to any MUN participant!
We are excited about this year’s theme “Combatting Crises with the Unconventional.” As the Stanford Social Innovation Review points out, “One of the precepts of social innovation is that innovations are created by people who are willing to look at the world in a fresh way and experiment with unconventional solutions. That’s how new ideas such as social entrepreneurship, venture philanthropy, and impact investing have emerged. And that’s how new solutions such as microfinance, benefit corporations, and fair trade commerce have been created.” ASDMUN hopes to continue to engage delegates who wish to think on their feet.
Part of the excitement of being at ASDMUN is the opportunity to participate in an MUN in a Middle Eastern country, which may be a unique experience for some of you. As you are surely aware, this region has some sensitive rules in order maintain cultural respect. Below is a legal guide of do’s and don’ts in the UAE:
- Do not write/debate anything that threatens the UAE’s public morals, the principles of Islam or the state.
- Do not post any pictures that contain irreverence to Islam or other religions. Any writing/debates must show respect to the UAE’s leaders, its government and its institutions.
- Do not post anything that belittles or criticises the UAE’s cultural and social customs. No writing/debates containing direct, specific threats of violence against mothers can be published.
- No hate speech – including content containing graphic or gratuitous violence. Always check the source of material you are posting – especially material that you do not own or is subject to someone else’s rights.
- Do not write/debate about people’s private information without getting their consent first.
ASDMUN is more than an event; it is a one of a kind experience providing both our current students and you the opportunity to meet new people, expand the breadth and depth of your knowledge and understanding of the world, and of course, have a great time! Every one of our current ASD students has been a participant of international MUNs. It is this type of dedication and enthusiasm that are the core of Model UN. Our anticipation and excitement for this year's event can only be exceeded by yours. We are confident that ASDMUN III will be outstanding, and we look forward to sharing the experience with you at our 4th American School of Dubai Model United Nations Conference! I look forward to greeting you personally.
Dear Honored Delegates,
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the American School of Dubai’s fourth annual Model United Nations conference. ASDMUN is a time at which delegates of all backgrounds can come together in hopes of tackling some of the world’s most dire issues. Held at a city known for its relentless aspiration to innovate, ASDMUN provides an unparalleled experience to those wishing to partake in its program.
Boasting a thoughtfully crafted panel of eight committees, ASDMUN’s propose is to ensure that every facet of the world’s most pressing issues is touched upon and encapsulated in this year’s conference. With forums such as the General Assembly (GA), Human Rights Commission (HRC), Environmental Commission (EC), Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Security Council (SC), International Court of Justice (ICJ), Arab Council (AC), and the newly introduced Historical Security Council (HSC), I urge you delegates to challenge yourselves by engaging in a field that you may never have thought to explore.
With respect to this year's subject matter of “Combatting Crises with the Unconventional," I not only encourage you all to think outside the box, but to disregard the box altogether. ASDMUN is here to exemplify the idea that creativity can be used at the least expected times, and seldom does creativity not, at the very least, provide the blueprints of formulating an universally beneficial solution. However, doing this may not be easy. Seeing as ASDMUN strives towards handpicking an array of delegations from different ideological backgrounds, it may appear to be seemingly impossible to fabricate a resolution that can encompass the wants and needs of all such nations. Although, with time I can ensure that through enough collaboration, leadership, and ultimately an unconventional way of thinking, such a feat can be achieved.
It is here where I present you all with your most critical task: be brave. Be brave enough to speak your mind (with respect, of course), be brave enough to say the things that many do not, and most of all be brave enough to lead and empower others around you to in order to ensure that this year's model United Nations conference, no matter how unorthodox it may seem, is a conference to be remembered.
Dear Honoured Delegates and Advisors,
On the behalf of the ASDMUN team, it is my honour to formally welcome you to the fourth annual ASDMUN conference. ASDMUN IV will be held at the American School of Dubai’s Al Barsha campus between the 24th and 27th of April 2019. Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and provides the ideal backdrop for a weekend of intense debate, conflict resolution, and planning for the future.
The three previous ASDMUN conferences have provided the opportunity for both experienced and inexperienced delegates to practice and realise the value of diplomacy, leadership, and conflict resolution. I hope that this year, we can continue this legacy through the theme ‘Combatting Crises with the Unconventional’. This theme challenges delegates to be as creative as possible when trying to find viable solutions to the numerous crises around the world. ‘The Unconventional’ is the future of diplomacy. As our world rapidly evolves, we have to evolve with it and expand our horizons in order to maintain peace and prosperity. We hope to make a move towards the future at ASDMUN IV.
The last three conferences have allowed students from a variety of schools to come together and learn from each other in their endeavours to find solutions to the world’s most pressing problems. This year we are happy to announce the addition of the Historical Security Council (HSC) which will provide the opportunity for delegates to explore Security Council Issues from the past through the lens of the present. Overall, there will be eight forums available for participation at ASDMUN IV: the Security Council (SC), Historical Security Council (HSC), General Assembly (GA), Human Rights Commission (HRC), Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Environment Commission (EC), Arab Council (AC), and International Court of Justice (ICJ). There will be opportunities open for student participation as delegates and student officers in all of these committees.
I hope that ASDMUN IV will serve as an opportunity for all of you to engage in a weekend of stimulating and intellectual debate whilst exploring one of the world’s most forward thinking cities. Model United Nations is not just about what we learn in a weekend, but how that weekend affects us for the rest of our lives and I hope that every delegate and student officer that participates in ASDMUN will leave as a more globally aware citizen, inspired to make a change in the world.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to the ASDMUN secretariat at email@example.com. I look forward to welcoming all of you to our campus and conference in the spring!
Co-Deputy Secretary General: Emily Rosindell
Dear Honoured Delegates,
We welcome you to ASDMUN IV, a forum for global interactions and vibrant debate. ASDMUN is held at the American School of Dubai, and is located in one of the most diverse and innovative cities in the world. We hold the quintessential background for a conference centered around nations coming together to create unity, through the 24th - 27th of April 2019.
This year’s conference theme is “Combatting Crisis with the Unconventional”, where we challenge and inspire delegates to adapt and contribute to our world in an unconventional manner, building on ASDMUN III’s theme of “Innovation in a Rapidly Changing World". Unconventional is defined by Cambridge English Dictionary as “not based on conforming to what is generally done”, and we are furthering this concept through taking action in an MUN setting. It is now up to you, delegates to decide what combating crisis in an unconventional manner will look like.
Delegates are reminded that our conference adheres to the laws of the United Arab Emirates, and THIMUN procedure for debate. This will be seen throughout our eight forums; Arab Council (AC), Environmental Commission (EC), Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), General Assembly (GA), Human Rights Commission (HRC), Security Council (SC), Historical Security Council (HSC), and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
We challenge delegates to prepare thoroughly for the conference and anticipate highly stimulated debate. To ensure maximum productivity, it is of the utmost importance to thoroughly research beforehand. I encourage you to open your minds to different possibilities and solutions, even ones you originally might not have supported. Integral to what we do as MUN delegates are the values of cooperation among thinkers and tolerance of ideas. We look forward to seeing your ideas and fruitful debate come together in the spring, at ASDMUN IV.
